Adding and editing words

From a box to your first word: create it, auto-translate, images and notes, verbs, managing a single word — and fast ways for big lists.

Three steps to your first word

Create a box — on the start page, add a box via the plus button (a word list, e.g. a lesson or a topic). More on this under Changing languages and boxes.
Open the word list — tap the box and switch to the Words tab.
Type a word — open the editor via the plus button.

Step by step

Tap the plus button to open the editor.
Enter the word in the foreign language and in your native language.
Tap the translate icon — the app suggests the matching translation and fills in the other field. That saves typing.
Tap Add. The word appears in the list right away.

Notes and synonyms

Next to each input field sit two small icons:

Synonym (plus icon) — add up to five alternative spellings or meanings. Each of them then counts as correct in exercises and tests.
Note (note icon) — reveal an extra field, e.g. for a mnemonic, an example sentence or a grammar remark.

Adding images

Use the image icon in the editor to attach one or more images to a word — from your photo library or straight from the camera. Images help a lot with memorisation: words you can see stick better.

Shape the picture: crop, rotate and adjust the aspect ratio until the important part sits well in frame. You can attach several images per word — tap + to add another; the selected thumbnail at the bottom is the one you’re editing.

Create images with AI (iOS only)

On iPhone and iPad you can also have a fitting picture created by AI — right in the image editor via Generate with AI. The app pre-fills the word (or the box’s name) as the subject; tweak the style if you like and accept the result with a tap. It works for words just as well as for box, folder and book covers.

The feature uses Apple’s Image Playground, so it’s iOS only — it’s not available on Android. Requirements:

iOS 18.2 or later
a device with Apple Intelligence — i.e. iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max and all iPhone 16 models and newer (plus iPads with an M1 or A17 Pro chip and up)
Apple Intelligence must be turned on in iOS Settings

On older devices the button simply doesn’t appear — there you add pictures from the gallery or with the camera as usual.

Verbs with their forms

Create a box as a verb box to capture verbs with their conjugated forms — infinitive, simple past and perfect. That way you practise irregular verbs specifically, not just one base form.

Managing a single word

Tap the word in the word list to open its detail view. There you see the word with its translation, images and notes — and every action for that one word sits in one place.

Edit – opens the word editor, where you change the texts, add synonyms and notes, and (for verbs) the conjugated forms.
Add images – the photo button attaches one or more pictures to the word: from the gallery, the camera, or – on iOS – created by AI. Tap an existing image to crop or delete it.
Move – files the word in another box. You pick the target box; if the word already exists there, the app tells you.
Delete – removes the word. A confirmation prompt guards against mistakes.
Archive word – takes the word out of the active learning rotation (flashcard box) without deleting it: it no longer shows up in exercises, but its place in the flashcard box is remembered. Unarchive brings it back, ready to learn again straight away.

Quick tip: you don’t have to open a word to act on it — swipe a row in the word list for Edit · Move · Delete, or swipe the other way to have it read aloud. More in Quick tips & shortcuts.

Move several words at once

You can also move several words into another box together. In the word list, press and hold a word — or tap Select at the top — to enter selection mode; a checkbox appears on every word.

Tap the words you want to move — or Select all.
Tap Move words.
Pick the destination box from the list and confirm with Move.

Words that already exist in the destination box are skipped.

Faster for big lists

For whole lists there are quicker ways than typing:

XLSX import — import entire lists from an Excel or Google Sheets file.
Shared lists — a list someone sent you as a .vbxshare file imports with a single tap, images included.
