XLSX import

Import entire word lists from Excel files — with a downloadable template.

What the import is for

The XLSX import brings entire word lists into a box at once — from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers (each exported as .xlsx). Perfect for textbook lessons, lists from class or large collections you don’t want to type out. There are two formats: words (word + translation, optionally with notes) and verbs (with their conjugated forms).

The template

This is how the file must be structured — pick words or verbs and download the matching template. The same templates can also be exported directly in the app (XLSX → Export template).

How the file is structured

  • Your entries start at row 4. Row 1 is the title, row 3 holds the column headers — the app only reads from row 4 onward. Whatever you put in the first three rows is not imported.
  • Columns A to D have fixed meanings. Enter the values in exactly these columns — one word per row, nothing shifted or swapped.
  • Words: column A (foreign language) and column C (mother language) must be filled, otherwise the row is skipped. The note columns B and D are optional.
  • Verbs: all four columns must be filled — infinitive, past tense, past perfect and mother language.
  • Synonyms are separated with a vertical bar: house | home.

Important: no formatting

The file must be plain text. No background colors, no borders, no merged cells, no bold or italics — formatting doesn’t belong in the file and can break the import. If you’re adapting an existing list, copy the values into a fresh template rather than importing the formatted original.

Import step by step

  1. Open the box you want to import into.
  2. Choose XLSX → Import and pick your file.
  3. Check the preview — the app shows what it found and points out duplicates.
  4. Confirm the import.

Good to know

  • Entries that are too long are automatically truncated to the maximum length during import — no row is lost.
  • The export works the other way round too: you can save any box as an XLSX file and keep editing it.
  • For teachers: maintain the list once, export it, send it to your class — everyone imports it with one tap.
